THE NEXTGEN MUTUAL MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Mentorship Defined

Mentorship is an established alliance in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. Mentorship includes a “mentor” – an experienced individual – who is meant to guide a “mentee” – a less experienced person.

Mentor → Mentee Model

Traditionally, in music education, mentorships have been established for more experienced music educators to mentor younger teachers who are just starting their career. The coaching and support for professional growth was typically one sided – the more seasoned educator shared their experienced wisdom and encouraged the teacher new to their profession.

Mentee as Mentor?

With rapidly advancing technology, changing social norms and new research in curriculum and practice, there are many new opportunities for an established educator to enhance their already established practice. As a member of the “NextGen”, a music teacher early in their career would be able to share with their more experienced mentorship partner their unique lens and experience with new technology, social norms and terminology, as well as share recent trends in music pedagogy they would have learned in their post-secondary education.

Mutual Mentorship!

The NextGen Mutual Mentorship program seeks to establish a mutually beneficial partnership, where both participants support each other by sharing their unique wisdom and lens to support each other in their professional growth.
