Chris Hadfield

Astronaut (Retd), musician, author, speaker

The study of music was very important to me becoming who I am: the contrasts of melody and harmony, of timing and syncopation, and the realization that individual notes and sounds could combine into something magnificent. Music taught me the critical importance of starting with the theory, of practicing on my own, of becoming confident in my abilities and new skills, and then contributing my key part to a larger group. The habits and successes learned through music helped me to be a better student, a safer pilot, and eventually even a more capable astronaut. Understanding music also helped me to notice the innate beauty that eternally sings all around us. Success in music, success in life.
